Meet Ann Mackay — the heart behind Lakeshore Recreation
If you’ve ever walked through the doors at Lakeshore and felt instantly welcome, supported, and at home — that’s no accident.
That feeling comes straight from the vision of Ann Mackay, co-owner of Lakeshore Rec alongside her husband, and a group fitness instructor whose energy, care, and passion are felt in every class she leads.
When asked how she describes Lakeshore to someone who’s never been here before, Ann says it simply and powerfully:
A welcoming, all-inclusive facility for every level of fitness — beginner to advanced — with staff and members who genuinely care.
And that sense of care? It’s the heartbeat of the community.
A place where everyone belongs
Ann believes fitness should feel accessible, not intimidating. That’s why Lakeshore offers a wide range of classes at different levels, clearly marked on the schedule, so members can start where they feel comfortable and progress safely and confidently.
Every class can be adapted. Every BODY is supported. The goal is always the same: success, safety, and sustainability.
What sets Lakeshore apart
In a town like Port Elgin, Ann credits two things above all else: the people and the variety.
Lakeshore is one of the largest and most well-rounded fitness facilities in the area — offering gym training, group fitness, squash, squash 57, pickleball, and year-round activities.
Visitors from larger cities are often surprised by the depth and variety of the class schedule, and Ann proudly believes Lakeshore offers some of the best instructors and equipment around.
Instructor first, owner second
Despite being an owner, Ann is right there on the floor with her members — coaching, motivating, and celebrating progress alongside them.
What she loves most about teaching? Watching people change. Not just physically, but in their mobility, confidence, daily movement, and overall enjoyment of life.
