Fun, Fitness, and Focus for Kids & Teens

This November, Lakeshore Recreation is excited to launch a new 6-week Junior Squash Program led by coach William Forsyth and Johnny Ballard — designed to introduce children and teens to the fast-paced, fun, and fitness-boosting sport of squash.

Whether your child has experience with racquet sports or has never picked up a racket before, this program offers the perfect introduction to squash in an encouraging and energetic environment.

“The Junior Squash Program is all about introducing juniors to the game of squash and the possibilities it can lead to,” explains William. “It’s about getting them on the court, teaching them the basics, and helping them learn to play confidently — both on their own and with others.”

Program Details

  • Length: 6 weeks

  • Start Date: November 16th - Dec. 21st, 2025

  • Ages: 9 to 17 (younger players may be accepted if interested)

  • Times: 9:00 a.m. (ages 9–13) and 10:00 a.m. (ages 14–17)

  • Location: Squash Courts at Lakeshore Recreation

Each week, players will focus on a new element of the game — from understanding the rules and movement patterns to learning and practicing specific shots. By the end of the six weeks, participants will have the skills and confidence to play a full game of squash on their own.

More Than a Game

While the program builds strong technical skills, William emphasizes that the benefits go far beyond the court.

“Squash helps with focus, emotional control, and confidence,” he says. “It’s a great way to relieve stress, stay active, and develop discipline — all while having fun.”

Children and teens will also build social connections with others their age and learn how to channel their energy in a positive, structured way.

Coaching Philosophy

William brings both passion and experience to his coaching.

“The most important thing for me is that the kids have fun,” he says. “If they’re not enjoying themselves, they won’t want to learn or improve. Safety and enjoyment come first — when those are in place, progress follows naturally.”

Why Try Squash?

If you or your child are curious about trying something new, William encourages you to give it a shot.

“There’s really no downside,” he says. “Even if they decide squash isn’t their sport, they’ll still benefit from the physical activity and confidence-building experience. But more often than not, they end up loving it — and sometimes it sparks a lifelong passion.”
