Johnny Ballard’s Squash Journey Comes Full Circle at Lakeshore
A few years ago, Johnny Ballard stepped onto the Lakeshore Recreation squash courts for the very first time as part of the Junior Squash Program.
He didn’t know then that those six weeks would spark a lasting passion — one that has now led him back to the same courts, not as a student, but as one of the program’s coaches and mentors.
“I was introduced to squash through this very program, at first, I had no idea what to expect — I’d never played before. But the coaches made it fun, the energy was contagious, and before I knew it, I was hooked.”
Growing Through the Game
The Junior Squash Program gave Johnny more than just technical skills — it built his confidence, focus, and discipline both on and off the court.
“Squash taught me patience, how to handle pressure, and how to stay calm when things don’t go your way, those lessons have helped me in school, sports, and everyday life.”
Now, as a young coach, Johnny is passionate about helping a new generation of players experience that same growth.
“It’s really rewarding to be on the other side — to see kids light up when they master a new shot or win a rally, I remember that feeling so clearly, and I want them to have it too.”
A Program That Builds Skills — and Character
The Junior Squash Program at Lakeshore Recreation is a 6-week experience designed for youth aged 9 to 17, offering two sessions based on age and skill level. Participants learn the fundamentals of the game — footwork, shot technique, strategy, and rules — while also developing fitness, focus, and emotional control.
Johnny emphasizes that you don’t need any prior experience to join.“I came in not knowing a thing about squash,” he says with a smile. “If you’re willing to try, you’ll pick it up fast — and have a ton of fun doing it.”
Coming Full Circle
Returning as a coach, Johnny finds it especially meaningful to work alongside his former mentors.
“It’s kind of surreal,” he admits. “The same people who taught me are now my teammates. It just shows how welcoming and supportive the Lakeshore community is.”
That sense of community — and the mix of competition, fun, and fitness — is what makes the program so special.
“We want kids to leave every session feeling proud, sweaty, and smiling, that’s when you know it’s working.”
